Jo Baker

Following a life-changing illness, Jo turned to painting as a path of healing. Her signature motif—the powerful symbol of one red fish swimming against the flow—embodies a journey of profound resilience.

Drawing on her background in dance, Jo translates the fluid energy of performance into the choreography of light and water found within her art.

Through years of intensive study, Jo has mastered a technique that is entirely her own. Inspired by the ancient art of verre églomisé — the technique of reverse gilding on glass — she reverse-paints and gilds an archival-grade, optical surface. Specifically chosen for its shatterproof resilience and UV-stability, this museum-quality medium ensures her work—whether using vibrant metallic leaf or bespoke 24ct gold and silver—retains its structural integrity and depth as it evolves within its environment. Built in layers, capturing and transforming light, her work becomes alive on the wall.

By “floating” these designs against hand-painted or gilded aluminium, Jo creates a sense of alchemy that is uniquely hers. Her pieces are designed to interact directly with the architecture, often installed to float seamlessly against the wall.

Shifting dynamically with the ambient light, each work echoes the rhythmic movement of water and transforms the atmosphere of a room.

Collectors and designers choose Jo’s work not only for its shimmering beauty, but because every piece tells a story—one that begins with her journey and becomes uniquely their own.

Her work is held in private collections internationally and is regularly exhibited through established galleries and major art fairs. She works on bespoke commissions, creating pieces designed for a range of interior settings, including large-scale and architectural environments.
